Dental Implants Aftercare: What to Do During and After the Procedure
Dental implants are small prosthetics used to replace missing or decayed teeth. They are most often administered in cosmetic dentistry settings, as replacing teeth helps improve form and aesthetic. Dental implants also help restore function and oral health.
Because dental implants offer so many benefits, most patients are eager to get the process started. However, being aware of what exactly is involved beforehand and what to expect afterward can be quite helpful.
During and after dental implants
Below is an overview of what patients are advised to do during a dental implant procedure, as well as afterward. This information should be reviewed prior to starting the implant process.
During the procedure
When dental implants are being placed, it is actually protocol for the patient to be put under general anesthesia. This avoids pain, dental anxiety, and complications. There is not much of anything that the patient can do during the actual implant placement procedure.
Beforehand, though, it is necessary for the patient to remain calm, arrange transportation home, take time off of work and prepare to rest for a few days. After the dental implants have been placed, the dentist will provide the patient with aftercare instructions and tips.
Afterward
Once dental implants have been placed, the patient will return home to rest and heal. While healing, it is advised to eat an adjusted diet consisting of soft foods and liquids. Additionally, pain medications should be taken in moderation and according to the dentist's instructions.
Healing generally takes a few days, and after that, the process of osseointegration begins. Osseointegration is the process in which the dental implants fuse naturally with the jawbone. This can take up to six months, depending on how many dental implants are placed.
Throughout osseointegration, the patient will visit the dentist's office regularly for check-up appointments. It is crucial that the patient maintain these appointments to ensure proper healing and progression.
Other things to know
As a cosmetic dentistry procedure, dental implant placement can be time-consuming and require patience. While ultimately, the results are worth it, dental implant placement does require a period of adjustment afterward. Patients have to learn how to function normally with the prosthetic paired with the dental implants. For example, dental crowns are often used for single tooth replacement, which may not be that much of an adjustment. However, if dentures are used, the process of getting used to eating and speaking may take time.
