Dental implants have become the standard for replacing teeth in cosmetic dentistry. They are versatile in the sense that they can replace one or multiple missing teeth. Additionally, teeth that are severely decayed can be extracted and replaced with dental implants. Cosmetic dentists can offer an array of combinations with implants, such as dentures, bridges, and dental crowns.
Besides the cosmetic dentistry advantages that come with dental implants, there are many restorative reasons that they are considered. Keep reading to find out more!
Dental implants 101
Below is a quick overview of dental implants, including what the procedure is like and how the results can achieve restorative and cosmetic goals.
The process
Dental implant placement does require minimally invasive oral surgery, which is important to be aware of beforehand. Outlined below are the steps of the dental implant process.
- The dental implants will be placed beneath the gums, directly in the bone during oral surgery
- Osseointegration will take place, which is the process in which the implants fuse with the natural bone; this process can take up to six months, depending on how many dental implants are placed
- After osseointegration, the patient returns to the cosmetic dentist for abutment placement (abutments are metal connectors that attach the implants to the prosthetic, whether that be crowns, dentures, or bridges)
- Impressions are taken to ensure that the final, permanent prosthetic fits perfectly
- Finally, the prosthetic can be attached; in the case of dental crowns, the procedure may require a bit of time, but if bridges or dentures are being used, the attachment procedure can be quick
Cosmetic goals
Dental implants help patients achieve a renewed smile, which may be compromised as a result of missing or decayed teeth. While the implants themselves are not the star of one's smile, the prosthetics used in conjunction are. The cosmetic dentist can decide which prosthetic makes the most sense, based on how many teeth need to be replaced.
Cosmetically speaking, dental crowns tend to look the most natural. However, if multiple teeth in a row are missing or an entire arch is missing, then implant supported dentures are the most suitable option.
Restorative goals
Dental implants not only renew smiles, but they also help individuals achieve normal mouth functionality again. Eating and speaking are easier to perform when dental implants have been placed. While there is an adjustment period required, ultimately, the result is full functionality.
