How a Broken Tooth Can Be Helped With Dental Restoration

A broken tooth can lead to a great deal of anxiety, but the good news is that there are several effective and minimally invasive treatment options. You can help calm any anxieties you have after a broken tooth by understanding all the treatment options that may be available.

Effective broken tooth treatment options

The recommended form of broken tooth treatment depends on the severity of the break, the type of break and the location of the tooth. Common types of broken tooth restoration options include composite bonding, dental veneers, crowns and tooth replacement, if the tooth is knocked out.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite resin material to the visible surface of the tooth. It is a common treatment option for a broken tooth, and dentists can use it to restore the shape, size and function of the tooth, along with protecting it from further damage and ensuring that symptoms such as tooth sensitivity are treated. Composite bonding can last for close to a decade with proper care. Bonding is most often recommended for a damaged front tooth, but it may not be the most ideal solution for teeth farther back in the mouth.

Dental veneer

Dental veneers are made of porcelain and closely resemble the shade of natural teeth. They are thin layers and applied to the visible surface of the front teeth. The veneer is custom-crafted to provide the perfect fit for a broken tooth, restoring its size, shape and overall function.

A dental veneer is commonly used for cosmetic purposes, but it also protects the tooth from further harm and can treat symptoms of a broken tooth, such as tooth sensitivity. However, a dental veneer is best for front teeth, and they may not offer the ideal durability necessary for teeth farther back in the mouth.

Dental crown

A dental crown is a great option for damaged molars and premolars. This is because it can be made with metal-alloy, gold or a porcelain-fused-to-metal material. These materials are stronger than the porcelain used for veneers and the composite resin used for dental bonding. Ceramic crowns are also available, which offer relatively good strength and a tooth-colored appearance. A dental crown covers the entire tooth for maximum support, and each crown is customized for the perfect fit and appearance.

Tooth replacement

Most dentists will do all that they can to save a broken tooth from becoming lost. However, there are certain times when a tooth is severely damaged and not able to be saved. If this is the case, then the dentist may recommend tooth replacement. The most common options for single tooth replacement are a dental implant, a fixed bridge or a partial denture.
