Tooth Replacement and Traditional Dentures

If you need tooth replacement, there are a few options available to restore your smile. Replacing a missing tooth is something you want to do as soon as you can. There are many consequences of having gaps in your mouth. Along with it being embarrassing and affecting your mental health, there are oral health issues. Tooth loss can make it difficult to eat and may even lead to bone loss. To replace your missing teeth, your dentist may recommend that you get dentures.

What causes tooth loss?

Teeth are made of the strongest material in the body. Thus, teeth are meant to last for a person’s lifetime. This does not mean that teeth are indestructible. With enough force and trauma, a tooth can fall out or become dislodged. This can happen from a hard blow to the face in a fall or during a contact activity. Biting into a hard object can also knock out a tooth.

Another cause of tooth loss is more gradual. This can be the effect of tooth decay or infections. Poor brushing and flossing habits can cause these conditions, deteriorating the tooth. Eventually, the tooth could become brittle and break and then fall out. Also, once one tooth goes missing, adjacent teeth can drift and become loose.

An overview of dentures

Dentures have long been a popular tooth replacement method. Today, dentures consist of a gum-colored acrylic base with artificial teeth attached to it. The teeth are made of porcelain, ceramic, or metal covered in plastic. The dentures can rest on the gums with the help of an adhesive. Or, the dentist may recommend implant-supported dentures.

What the dentures do

Dentures provide a natural-looking tooth replacement solution. The artificial teeth are the same shape and color as natural teeth. The teeth are also durable and allow the person to chew most foods. Dentures restore the aesthetics of the patient’s smile and the function of the mouth.

The process

When a patient looks for a tooth replacement solution, the dentist will hold a consultation. The dentist will explain different options, including how dentures can help. The dentist will make impressions of the mouth to create a set of dentures that fit properly. At a subsequent appointment, the dentist places the appliance in the persons’ mouth to make sure it is comfortable.

Maintenance

Wearing dentures requires diligent maintenance and care. The patient should rinse them off frequently, especially after eating. Overnight, the person should soak the dentures in a solution that the dentist recommends. It is also important to avoid eating hard and sticky foods. This can reduce the risk of the appliance breaking. If the patient notices any damage to the dentures, they should contact the dentist right away.

Tooth replacement is possible and can revive your smile

Few dental conditions can be as difficult to live with as missing teeth. This condition can affect your ability to eat healthy meals. It can also cause depression and a low self-image. But you do not have to suffer with gaps in your mouth any longer. Talk to your dentist about getting dentures.
