What Is Involved in Getting Implant Supported Dentures?

Implant Supported Dentures Saratoga Springs, NY

Implant supported dentures are a hybrid tooth replacement treatment performed by cosmetic dentists. They work to replace missing teeth, which enhances one's appearance and improves the bite, making it easier to speak and eat naturally. However, the process is not a simple procedure, as there are a few steps to be aware of. Keep reading to find out what is involved!

The process of getting implant supported dentures

Outlined below are the steps of getting implant supported dentures. It can be helpful to review the following information when considering different tooth replacement treatments.

Implant placement procedure

The first thing that goes into the process is the placement of the dental implants. The placement procedure does require minimally invasive oral surgery, which can take up to two hours, depending on how many implants are placed. The patient is put under anesthesia and given pain medication.

Osseointegration

The next thing is osseointegration. This process is when the dental implants integrate with the natural bone in the jaw. Because dental implants are made of titanium, the body rarely rejects the material, thus making the process of osseointegration successful and efficient.

Osseointegration typically takes four to six months, especially in the case of implant supported dentures. Since multiple implants are being placed, the mouth has to have ample time to fuse.

Abutment placement

Abutments are small metal pieces that connect the head of the dental implant to the denture piece. Implant supported dentures are different than traditional ones in the sense that they are secured in place. However, in order for the denture piece to stay in place, abutments have to be installed first. The installation procedure for abutments is relatively simple and quick.

Denture fitting

Once the abutments have been attached, the patient can undergo denture fitting. As with traditional dentures, implant supported dentures do require impressions to be taken in order for the final piece to be secure and snug. Impression taking is quick, and cosmetic dentists are experts at it. Once impressions have been taken, they are sent to a dental lab, where the final piece will be created.

Final steps

Because the denture piece has to be custom-created in a dental lab, the process can take a few weeks to be complete. But after that, the patient can return to the cosmetic dentist to have the final denture attached. The dentist will ensure that the fit is 100% perfect, with no looseness or excess material. Additionally, any recommendations and tips on adjusting will be provided to help the patient get used to their new teeth.

To find out more about implant supported dentures and how they are used in cosmetic dentistry, it is best to consult directly with a dentist. An evaluation can be done to determine the best place to start. Additionally, any questions or concerns can be appropriately addressed.
