A guide to implant supported dentures

Below is a quick overview of implant supported dentures, including important things to know and any expectations that patients should be aware of.

The process can be time-consuming

The implant supported dentures process involves two parts, the first being dental implant placement and the second being denture piece attachment. While the former does require a few hours, the most time-consuming part is afterward. After the implants have been placed, the patient has to undergo osseointegration, which can take a few months, especially in the case of full-arch tooth replacement.

Once osseointegration has been completed, the patient can return to the cosmetic dentist in order to have abutments placed, which are small metal connectors that the denture piece attaches to. Abutment placement is typically their own procedure, but in some scenarios, the dentist may also attach the dentures too. The denture piece itself is custom-made for each patient, which can take a few weeks to make because every groove, pit, and fissure of the teeth has to be recorded to ensure a perfect fit.

Minimally invasive surgery is required

Unlike traditional dentures, implant supported ones do require oral surgery, which can be viewed as a downside for some. However, it is good to know that the implant placement procedure is minimally invasive, meaning that it is not too harsh on the oral cavity. The recovery time does not take nearly as long as some other oral surgeries, which makes it easier to heal. Nonetheless, a few days of rest are required, along with pain management and an adjusted diet.

There is an adjustment period

Another thing to know is that implant supported dentures do require an adjustment period. Like most cosmetic dentistry treatments, implant supported dentures will not feel natural right off the bat, which is 100% normal and common. The adjustment period varies for everyone, with some people getting used to it within a few days and others taking a couple of weeks.

Cosmetic dentists recommend practicing eating slowly with the implant supported dentures. Foods that are soft and not too tough to chew are easier to start with. Additionally, practicing different words when speaking can be helpful when trying to adjust.

Getting started with implant supported dentures

When considering implant supported dentures, it is best to start by consulting with a cosmetic dentist. Questions or concerns can be addressed, and an evaluation can be done to determine the best course of action, whether that be implant supported dentures or another cosmetic dentistry treatment option.
